Education and Awareness are Key to Digital Wellness

Like physical wellness, the goal is to develop healthy habits and boundaries that support our well-being. And just like physical wellness it starts with awareness.

With the onslaught of devices and gadgets around us, understanding Digital Wellness can greatly impact our focus, productivity, and mental and physical health. Just like mental or physical wellness, the steps you take today may yield rewards at a later time, and it starts by building healthier habits.

In today's tech-driven world, digital wellness has become essential to maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As our reliance on technology grows, understanding and prioritizing digital wellness can improve mental and physical health, productivity, and overall well-being.

As we explore the concept of Digital wellness, let’s start by clarifying what it is not. Digital Wellness is NOT the denunciation of technology. It is the pursuit of a healthier relationship with technology—a relationship in which we utilize the technology at our disposal rather than being enslaved to it.

Digital wellness means that we control our devices, not vice versa. That we use them consciously and they remain tools in our disposal. Like physical wellness, the goal is to develop healthy habits and boundaries that support our well-being. And just like physical wellness it starts with awareness.

There is no right answers on how to be ‘Digitally Well but there are right questions. And by asking the right questions, you can find the path that fits you best. And the first question is very simple: Am I in control of my time and my attention?

Do you - like millions of people - find yourself mindlessly scrolling, reaching for your phone for no clear reason? Do you find it hard to sit back and relax or to socialize without reaching into your pocket for your phone?

If the asnwer to those questions are positive, you are not alone - like millions of people all over the world you have developed a dependency on your phone or a need for distraction that verges on addiction. Recognizing that is the first step to digital wellness. But the more you understand and stay informed, the better chance you have to stay digitally well.

Awareness is not just a sudden epiphany, it comes down to truly understand the problem, but even more, to understand your self.

Here are some steps you can take to set yourself up for success on this journey:

Be In The Know - Information is power. And when it comes to contending with the addictive nature of our devices, the very knowledge of how those devices are designed to hook you into addiction is an essential step of resisting it. There are many resource where you can get started.

Take Inventory -  Inventory is about truly understanding the toll our phones have on our lives - how it impacts our focus, our attention span and our relationships. Try to pay more attention to how you are impacted by your devices. Once you implement boundaries, pay attention to the positive impact on your life and work.

Digital wellness is not a quick fix, but by taking the necessary steps, one at a time, a better quality of life waits on the other side.
